Former minister Bogner-Strauß opens Eva Moser memorial tournament in Graz

The „Chess Ladies Graz“ will take place at Palais Attems in Graz from 25 February to 3 March 2024 in memory of the top Austrian chess player Eva Moser. The tournament was opened yesterday, Sunday, by the President of the Austrian Chess Federation Michael Stöttinger and former Federal Minister Juliane Bogner-Strauß in the presence of Eva Moser’s parents and the President of the Styrian Chess Federation Gerd Mitter.

Eva Moser, whose death marks the 5th anniversary of her death, is the best female chess player in Austrian chess history. Born in Carinthia, she moved to Graz after leaving school, where she spent the rest of her life. Eva Moser was the only woman in Austrian chess history to become „Open“ state champion and was also very successful internationally. She got the title International Master, her best rating was 2471.

In the first round, Styrian-born Jasmin-Denise Schloffer manages to draw with former European Championship silver medallist Lilit Mkrtchian from Armenia. In the duel between two Austrians, Denise Trippold started the tournament with a black win against Annika Fröwis. In the other three encounters, the favoured foreign players prevailed against the local representatives.

All games of the tournament will be broadcast live on the internet. The tournament will be played until Saturday 3 March 2024 and visitors are very welcome at Palais Attems. (wk, Photos: Christine Kipper)
